# SOURCES: every number on leuklogic.com

Generated by `_build/make_sources.py` from `data/needs.json` and `data/milestones.json`. Data retrieved **2026-10-04**.
Each figure was read from the provider's own response at build time by `_build/fetch_data.py` (raw responses kept in `_build/receipts/`);
the build script also asserts that the cited pages still say what we quote. Rule: a figure we cannot verify at its source is dropped, never guessed.

## Present-day gaps (homepage tiles and `/needs/`)

| Need | Figure | Year | Source | Licence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food | 8.5% of the world's people were undernourished in 2023. | 2023 | [SN.ITK.DEFC.ZS](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SN.ITK.DEFC.ZS) (FAO (SDG 2.1.1), via World Bank WDI) | [CC BY 4.0 (World Bank, World Development Indicators)](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0037712/World-Development-Indicators) |
| Water | 73.7% of people used safely managed drinking water in 2024. About one person in four did not. | 2024 | [SH.H2O.SMDW.ZS](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.H2O.SMDW.ZS) (WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme, via World Bank WDI) | [CC BY 4.0 (World Bank, World Development Indicators)](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0037712/World-Development-Indicators) |
| Shelter | 23.2% of the world's urban population lived in slums in 2022. | 2022 | [EN.POP.SLUM.UR.ZS](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.POP.SLUM.UR.ZS) (UN-Habitat Urban Indicators Database, via World Bank WDI) | [CC BY 4.0 (World Bank, World Development Indicators)](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0037712/World-Development-Indicators) |
| Health | The world's under-5 mortality rate was 37.4 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024. | 2024 | [SH.DYN.MORT](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.DYN.MORT) (UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, via World Bank WDI) | [CC BY 4.0 (World Bank, World Development Indicators)](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0037712/World-Development-Indicators) |
| Energy | 91.9% of people had access to electricity in 2024. The rest, about 8%, did not. | 2024 | [EG.ELC.ACCS.ZS](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.ELC.ACCS.ZS) (SDG 7.1.1 Electrification Dataset (Tracking SDG7), via World Bank WDI) | [CC BY 4.0 (World Bank, World Development Indicators)](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0037712/World-Development-Indicators) |
| Learning | 48.3% of children at the end of primary-school age were below minimum reading proficiency in 2019 (learning poverty). | 2019 | [SE.LPV.PRIM](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SE.LPV.PRIM) (World Bank / UNESCO Institute for Statistics (learning poverty), via World Bank WDI) | [CC BY 4.0 (World Bank, World Development Indicators)](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0037712/World-Development-Indicators) |

All six come from the World Bank World Development Indicators API (`api.worldbank.org/v2/country/WLD/indicator/<id>?mrnev=1`, most recent value), world aggregate. Attribution: World Bank, WDI, CC BY 4.0, with the underlying agency named in each row.
Cross-check against Our World in Data (same agencies, read from its CSVs): undernourishment 8.5% (2023) and 8.2% (2024, FAO); safely managed water 73.7% (2024, JMP); electricity access 91.9% (2024). All agree with the WDI values or are a later year of the same series.
One disagreement, stated plainly: slums. WDI says 23.2% (2022); the UN-Habitat series on OWID says 24.8% for both 2022 and 2024, so WDI lags a UN-Habitat revision. The site shows the WDI figure with its year.

## Arithmetic on sourced figures

- Water tile: "about one person in four did not" is 100 minus 73.7 (26.3%), rounded in words.
- Energy tile: "the rest, about 8%" is 100 minus 91.9.
- Health tile meter: the bar is drawn as value divided by 10 so that per-1,000 sits on a percent scale; the printed number is the sourced one.

## Dropped (not shown on the site)

- **673.2 million undernourished people, 2024 (FAO via OWID)** (verified): Verified in the OWID CSV, but the original data licence is CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO (non-commercial). LeukLogic is a business, so the CC BY World Bank republication of the FAO prevalence is used instead.
- **2.14 billion people without safely managed drinking water, 2024 (WHO/UNICEF JMP via OWID)** (verified): Verified in the OWID CSV, but licence is CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 IGO (non-commercial). The CC BY World Bank share is used instead.
- **Learning poverty of about 70% in low- and middle-income countries (2022 estimate)** (not verifiable at source): Could not be read from the World Bank API (its WDI series returns 57.2% for low and middle income, 2019, and 48.3% for the world, 2019). Dropped rather than quoted from memory.
- **Number of people without electricity access** (not verifiable at source): No open headcount series was found at the source; the World Bank share (91.9%) is used instead. A headcount obtained by multiplying by population would be a derived number, so it is not shown.
- **Solar PV module price fall since 1976 (OWID)** (verified): Verified ($99.60/W in 1976 to $0.27/W in 2024) but its mixed licences include (c) IRENA 2025, so it is not used. Ember's CC BY solar share is used instead.

## Not numbers, but also sourced

- Fonts: Fraunces and Figtree, SIL Open Font License 1.1, self-hosted (`fonts/`), fetched once from Fontsource via jsDelivr.
- Film V01 and keyframes: made with AI tools (visuals and narration), labelled as AI-generated everywhere they appear. A vision, not footage of real events.
- "9 free tools": the nine pages under `/tools/` that already existed.
- No visitor counts, pledge counters, testimonials or user numbers appear anywhere. A global pledge counter would need a backend; see README.
